Loc Creation Methods Covered

Two-Strand Twist
Split evenly; cross left-over-right then right-over-left, maintaining consistent tension. Use the finger-run test: if it catches in the middle, your twist is correct.
Comb Coil + Two-Strand
Enter with tapered comb teeth, set root with one clockwise turn, split into two, then twist. Finish with a palm roll and clip the base while setting.
Full Interlock
Work 12/3/6/9 insertions; alternate directions to avoid holes. Start with fingers, transition to crochet when passages narrow; always end in a down position for stability.
Instalocks
Backcomb to matte, then crochet with open side up, advancing gradually while rotating the strand. Watch knuckles and cuticles—slow, controlled passes prevent punctures.

Tools & Supplies

Essentials

  • Crochet hook (sizes vary by strand size)
  • Small-tooth barber comb & sectioning comb
  • Clips (butterfly + duckbill)
  • Locking gel/cream/butter (max hold when needed)
  • Draping, towels, spray bottle

Station Setup

  • Four quadrants parting → 1-finger-width rows → fingertip-width subsections
  • Start at the nape; progress upward for consistency and client comfort
  • Photo documentation at start, midway, finish

Hair Types & Expectations

We address strategies for straight, wavy, curly, and kinky textures. Tighter textures typically lock faster; straighter textures may need bonding sprays or higher-hold products and a longer set period. We calibrate wet vs. dry starts by texture response.

Safety & Sanitation

  • Clarifying shampoo followed by moisturizing cleanse on day one; finish with leave-in (as texture allows).
  • Thorough drying to prevent odor or microbial growth—especially in early stages.
  • Avoid repeated same-direction passes when interlocking to prevent holes.
  • Protective sleep protocols and early-phase moisture management by texture.
  • Offer satin/loc socks for retail; document and educate aftercare at checkout.
